“Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. While President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, many enslavers continued to hold enslaved Black people captive after that date. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and slavery. Thus, Juneteenth became a symbolic date representing African American freedom. Juneteenth officially became the 11th federal holiday on June 17, 2021.”
Messiah Episcopal in Chester, together with Brookside UCC and other local congregations will commemorate this date with a service of music, readings, prayer, resources, and children’s activities. Please join us.
